The soaring summer temperatures are sending crowds of Long Islanders to the coast and to public pools this weekend.

State parks like Jones Beach were preparing for enormous crowds as temperatures climb into the 90s on the busy holiday weekend ahead of the Fourth of July.

In New Hyde Park, the pool at the Clinton G. Martin Park on Marcus Avenue reopened not a moment too soon. The pool had been closed for more than a year as part of a $23 million refurbishment project, but it reopened Saturday in time for crowds to cool off with a turn on the brand new water slide.

News 12 meteorologists say the weather this weekend will be mostly sunny, hot, hazy and increasingly humid. High temperatures will be in the low- to mid-90s, but will feel even hotter with the humidity.

Experts are advising people to take precautions before venturing out in the scorching heat. Drink plenty of water, limit time outdoors, take breaks by going into air conditioned spaces, and always wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses. It's a good idea to stay away from alcohol or high-sugar drinks to avoid dehydration.

Suffolk police are reminding residents that pets face the same risks that people do in warmer weather, including overheating, dehydration and sunburn. They say to make sure pets have plenty of water, limit their physical activity outdoors during the hottest times of day, and remember to never leave a pet inside a car.

And the Town of Hempstead is reminding swimmers that the risk for rip currents is high. Officials in the town are also announcing that they're extending beach and pool hours and opening cooling centers during this extreme heat.
