Police charge South Brunswick mom after child's fatal overdose

A Middlesex County mother is facing charges after she allegedly allowed her 2-year-old son to ingest her methadone, which resulted in his death.
Lynn Bergans, 34, was charged Tuesday with reckless manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child.
The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office says that South Brunswick police were called to Bergans’ Sandhill Road home on May 15 after her son became unresponsive. Efforts to revive the child were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.
Authorities say that the child died after ingesting a mixture of water and methadone, which was prescribed to Bergans. Methadone is typically used to treat opioid addiction.
Bergans is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center pending a court appearance.
