A fallen firefighter is the inspiration behind a foundation that aims to help the families of first responders.
Robert Tolley started the
Fires and Drums Foundation in the memory of his brother and best friend, Billy Tolley. He was an FDNY firefighter who died in the line of duty in April of last year.
The name of the foundation combines Billy Tolley's two passions, the fire department and music. Its mission is to provide financial support to the families of first responders and military members that suffer tragedy, like the Tolleys did.
"My brother was always the person that wanted to help other people," says Robert Tolley. "He was a brother to me for over 20 years, we traveled the world together, wrote music together... I thought the best way to honor him, to respect his name, his legacy, would be to start a foundation to help others."
A skeet shooting outing that was held Monday at LI Sporting Clays in Yaphank marked the foundation's first fundraiser. They hoped to raise more than $10,000.
The foundation is planning more events in the future.
