#N12BX: School zone speed cameras

Mayor Bill de Blasio says children's lives will be in danger because the Republican-led state Senate didn't pass legislation extending the use of speed cameras near city schools.
The measure extending the four-year-old school zone camera program past its July 25 expiration stalled in the Senate as lawmakers ended their six-month 2018 session early Thursday morning.
The cameras were put in place in 2015 as part of the mayor's Vision Zero plan.
There are currently 140 school zone speed cameras in the city.
Some lawmakers want to increase the number of cameras inside school zones to 290.
While others are opposed to adding more.
The cameras will be removed by July 25, unless lawmakers return to Albany to make an agreement.
