NEW YORK -

Volunteers were honored Thursday for International Blood Donor Day.

The day recognizes those who have given the gift of life by donating blood.

According to officials, severe weather this winter and spring, as well as a brutal flu season, have caused a blood shortage.

The New York Blood Center has declared a blood emergency for the area and is urging Long Islanders to donate.
