A father and daughter thanked doctors at Cohen Children’s Medical Center after the 7-year-old girl underwent reconstructive surgery.

Last year, Savanah was hit by a truck while waiting for a school bus in Ghana, leaving her with a disfiguring facial injury. She recovered from the accident but was unable to get the reconstructive surgery she needed in Ghana.

Savanah’s father, Isaac Patterson, brought Savanah to the United States in March to live with him permanently in Floral Park. She was referred to Cohen Children’s Medical Center and on June 4 underwent the surgery.

Doctors decided to take bone from the back of her head which wasn't injured and use it to reconstruct the part that was. They used 3D technology to surgically map out exactly how much bone they needed.

“We were able to remove that part of the bone that exactly matched the size of what we needed to fill in in the front,” said Dr. Nicholas Bastidas.

Doctors say Savanah is supposed to be taking it easy for the next few weeks. It may be a challenge for her. She was dancing with News 12 reporter Shari Einhorn in the hallways of the hospital, just 10 days after her surgery.

Her father said her recovery is the best gift for Father’s Day.

Dr. Bastidas gave Savanah a dictionary as a gift because she wants to be a doctor when she grows up.
