Tenants appeal to Rent Guidelines Board to freeze hikes

The city Rent Guidelines Board hosted Brooklyn residents Wednesday evening at a public comment session on rising rent prices and laws regarding lease renewal adjustments.
Many of the people who spoke demanded a rent freeze to slow gentrification and displacement.
The public hearing follows a preliminary vote on April 26 in favor of tentative guidelines for next year. They won't become official unless they pass a final vote on June 26.
They told personal stories about how their own lives have been uprooted by those forces.
The meeting is the third in five planned events before the board's June 26 vote. Both of the remaining meetings will be held in Manhattan next week.
