New Jersey has been named as a potential site for the 2026 World Cup final.
The announcement comes on the heels of the announcement that North America will host the competition in 2026
The 2026 World Cup will be the largest tournament in history – the first to feature 48 teams.
The 2018 World Cup tournament begins Thursday. The United States did not qualify.
There is hope that the U.S. will be involved in 2026. It is customary for the hosting nation to automatically qualify for the tournament.
“There’s no doubt that when the World Cup is here in eight years it's going to do incredible things to elevate the sport of soccer to levels we probably can't even imagine today,” Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber says. “We’re really honored at MLS to be part of this joyous day and to do what we can to continue to drive the growth and success of this sport at all levels.”
Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted, “MetLife Stadium and the Meadowlands region are an ideal site for the World Cup. New Jersey has hosted World Cup matches before and we are more than ready to do so again.”
FIFA will have the final say as to where the tournament will take place.
