Librarian catalogs stories from Long Island’s military veterans

MELVILLE -

A librarian at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library made it her mission to record the stories of military veterans so they will not be forgotten.

Reference librarian Edna Susman has performed nearly 100 interviews with veterans in her Veterans Testimonial Project.

The veterans she has spoken to and cataloged on DVD range from World War II service members all the way through the recent conflicts in the Middle East. She told News 12 that she wants to speak with more Long Island veterans so their stories can be recorded.

"Even if they don't go to combat zone, the things [military service members] do for us, it's amazing," says Edna.

Vietnam combat photographer Ron Rorie, of Dix Hills, told his story to Susman. He saw it as a way to preserve history and his sanity.

“It helped me deal with many of the issues I had of shame and guilt,” said Rorie.

Adam Arabian, of Lake Grove, served in Afghanistan and witnessed two friends from New York get killed in combat. He wanted to tell his story so the memory of his friends wouldn’t be lost.

“My sacrifice was small compared to a lot of the other men and women that lose their lives and sacrifice everything for our country,” said Arabian.

Susman’s interviews are shared with the Library of Congress for their historical records.
