Great Neck HS employee diagnosed with bacterial meningitis

GREAT NECK -

Officials say an employee at Great Neck North High School has been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.

According to Newsday, the Nassau County health department is investigating the situation, and says it has been in contact with the employee.

Bacterial meningitis is a severe bloodstream infection that usually appears after prolonged exposure. Symptoms can include high fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck and rash.

An email sent out to community members by the superintendent states, "Anyone who may have had contact with that employee has already been notified. Casual contact that may occur in a regular classroom or office setting is not usually significant enough to cause any concern."

School officials say parents, students and anyone else who has been in contact with that employee has been notified.

"Just to know that at least one person does have it, it’s kind of scary that it could spread," says one student.

The email identifies the dates of possible exposures with the employee as anywhere between May 14 - May 16, May 23 and May 25.

Officials have not identified the employee or their role at the school.
