Dog flu confirmed in Brooklyn, could head to LI

WOODBURY -

A flu virus that can get your dog sick and even be fatal could head to the area.

Like the flu for humans, the virus is easily spread. A vet in Brooklyn tells News 12 Long Island that it's only a matter of time until it spreads to Long Island, especially with summer travel coming.

Pure Paws Veterinary Care in Brooklyn says they have three confirmed cases of dog flu and six more suspected. At this point, there are no confirmed cases on Long Island.

Symptoms include sneezing, coughing and loss of energy and appetite.

Dr. Neil Weiss of Manetto Hill Animal Hospital says he's vaccinating dogs for two different strains of canine influenza.

"Dogs that are vaccinated typically will either shrug off the virus or they may have shortened symptoms," says Weiss.

While the virus spreads quickly among dogs, humans can't get it. Weiss says the virus is not typically fatal if it's treated right away.
