The city is pushing to expand its speed camera program in school zones, officials say.

The Department of Transportation recently made a trip to Albany where officials spoke to the state legislature about supporting the expansion. 

The DOT says 84 percent of deaths or severe injuries between 2012-2016 occurred at locations or times where speed cameras are currently prohibited.

They say more cameras are needed around school zones.

Currently, they have 140 active speed cameras set up along school zones across the city but they need more.

According to state law, 140 cameras along school zones are the maximum amount allowed.

The DOT says the law also prohibits cameras from being within a certain proximity of schools.

The new bill would allow cameras closer inside of school zones so those who are caught speeding could receive a ticket.

The city needs State Legislature's support to expand the NYC speed camera program they say to prevent traffic injuries and deaths.
