Jury deliberations begin in Nassau corruption trial

CENTRAL ISLIP -

Jury deliberations began Friday and will continue Monday after the 10-week corruption trial of former Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, his wife Linda and former Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto.

Jurors deliberated for more than seven hours without reaching a verdict.

The jury sent a note back to the judge asking for a cheat sheet that was promised. The paper will allow them to more easily find evidence that they may be looking to analyze. The judge said she would send the sheet back to the jury.

A second note requested a 10-minute smoking break. That request was granted.

During the afternoon, the jury asked for a readback or transcript of testimony from FBI Special Agent Laura Spence. Her testimony may play a key role in the jury's decision-making regarding Linda Mangano's charges of lying to the FBI and obstruction of justice.

The jurors did not receive the transcript today because Mangano's attorney had a previous engagement and couldn't be there in person. He was available by phone but could not review the transcripts, so the judge said the jury would receive the transcript Monday morning after Mangano's attorney can review it.
