Driver accused of DWI following fiery Farmingdale crash

FARMINGDALE -

A man who police say caused a fiery chain-reaction crash in Farmingdale had to be rescued from his car before police charged him with drunken driving.

"It was an explosion," says Ken Gates, who lives nearby on Jefferson Road and awoke in the middle of the night to the sounds of the wreck. "I can't believe he's not dead."

Nassau police say Garret O'Reilly, 23, was drunk and speeding just after 3 a.m. Monday when he slammed into a parked SUV and knocked it into another parked car.

They arrested him at the scene, where they say he smelled like alcohol and slurred his speech.

"It was a really bad accident," says Gates who owns the parked cars -- which he adds are both totaled. "He must've been going 100 mph."

O'Reilly faces DWI and reckless driving charges.
