Report: Town of Huntington eyes buying Northport power plant

Posted: Updated:
HUNTINGTON -

News 12 has learned that Huntington is reportedly interested in buying the Northport power plant for over $190 million.

Members of the Huntington Town Board are discussing acquiring the plant through eminent domain, according to The Observer.

The news comes just as LIPA asks the courts for a 90 percent reduction in the plant's assessed value.

If that happened, taxes in the Northport School District would soar, but if the plant is purchased, officials in Huntington say property taxes would drop along with electric rates.
