The 2018 Long Island Marathon got underway Sunday morning, with thousands of runners taking on the course. 

Participants stepped off from the starting line on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard to take on the 26.2-mile race.

Thomas Rammelkamp, originally from Miller Place, finished first in the men's race, clocking in at just 2 hours and 33 minutes. The 28-year-old had registered for the race at the last minute after having to drop out of the Boston Marathon because he got hypothermia on the course. 

Gabrielle Russo, of Patchogue, won the women's race at just over 2 hours and 50 minutes.

About 10,000 spectators were expected in and around Eisenhower Park. More than a dozen road closure are in effect for the race.

Police put heightened security in place, with SWAT teams, the Bomb Squad, Homeland Security officials and K-9 units on hand.

County officials had urged spectators to leave their bags at home before heading to the finish line. Only clear plastic bags were permitted in the park on Sunday.

News 12's Kevin Vesey numbered among the marathon runners.

County officials tell News 12 that 5,500 people were registered for the weekend’s activities. Saturday marked the 1-mile run, 5K race and kids' fun run.
