A Brentwood home was destroyed by a raging fire Thursday afternoon – leaving 20 residents displaced.

The flames erupted just after 12 p.m. at the home on Wurz Street. Jason Capurso, a neighbor, said he saw people running out of the house, and then called 911.

"The front window of the house blew out and the whole front of the house went up,” said Capurso. “Within 10 minutes, the whole thing was engulfed in flames. It easily had 10-15 feet flames from the top of the roof."

Officials said 100 fire and EMS personnel from eight departments responded to the fire. It took 2 ½ hours to contain.

Brentwood Fire Marshal Robert Kuehn did not say how many families live at the residence. He said 15 people live there, and that six were home at the time of the incident.

Kuehn said that two of the occupants were taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for smoke inhalation. One of the victims also suffered a burn to the hand.

Investigators said the arson squad is looking into how and where the fire started.

The Red Cross is now helping residents with food, clothing and temporary housing in a hotel.
