Study: Synthetic opioids most common drug for fatal overdoses

Posted: Updated:
WOODBURY -

A new report says synthetic opioids, like fentanyl, have overtaken prescription painkillers as the most common drug involved in fatal overdoses.

The Journal of the American Medical Association looked at overdose deaths between 2010 and 2016. It found that 46 percent of overdoses involved counterfeit synthetics compared to 40 percent for prescription opioids.

Addiction experts say they are seeing the same type of increase on Long Island. They say addicts are seeking out those types of drugs because they are readily available and they are cheap.

“It doesn't take a lot. If you look at the amount of fentanyl in the average heroin sample, it's like a couple grains of salt,” says Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, of the Family and Children's Association. “A little bit of fentanyl goes a long way…not only in deepening or exacerbating that high, but also in claiming lives."
