WOODBURY -

The Boy Scouts will soon change their name as a result of the decision to accept girls.

Starting next February, the iconic program that dates back 108 years will be referred to as Scouts BSA.

The BSA stands for Boy Scouts of America, which is the program's parent organization.

Boys and girls who are members will simply be referred to as "scouts."

The Girl Scouts organization maintains that it has been the "premier girl leadership development organization and the girl expert for over 100 years."

But Scarlett Conn, an 8-year-old girl, says she had always wanted to follow her brother's footsteps and become a scout.

Now she can.

Boy Scouts Operations Director Julio Garcia says the name change and the decision to admit girls came at the request of families.

"Scouts will continue to be scouts," he says. "They will continue to earn merit badges. They will continue to go camping. They will continue to become Eagle Scouts."

As for Scarlett, she says she hopes to be among the first female Eagle Scout in history.

Officials say the Cub Scouts, the division for younger children, will keep its name.
