A short film about a doctor at a Bronx hospital will be making its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival. 

“Corazon” is based on the true story of Dr. Mario Garcia, from Montefiore Medical Center, and his lifesaving efforts for a woman with a heart condition in the Dominican Republic.

The 32-year-old woman, Elena, was dying of heart disease when Dr. Garcia stepped in to help her obtain a visa to the U.S. for a heart operation. 

Elena underwent surgery at Montefiore Medical Center in 2015 that would implant a mechanical pump in her heart. Dr. Garcia says that Elena would've died if she stayed in the Dominican Republic, and now she's thriving.

Once a month, Dr. Garcia travels to the Dominican Republic to teach medical students and provide free medical care. 

Dr. Garcia, who is the head of Montefiore Medical Center's cardiology department, says that the film’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival is humbling.

"I never in my wildest imagination thought that I was going to be portrayed as a character in a movie," says Dr. Garcia.
