Students on Long Island and across the nation took a stand against cyberbullying today as part of Call It Out Day.

Art teacher Allison Filippone spearheaded the effort to bring the nationwide initiative to Sewanhaka High School after noticing there were a lot of students who were bullied online – like junior Flo Hunte.

"When I was younger, I used to have a gap in my teeth, and I used to be very insecure about it and the negative comments on social media didn't make it any better for me," says Hunte. Those comments had a lasting impact. "It made me sad and at some points I was depressed about it."

Student pledges will be part of murals that adorn the walls of Sewanhaka’s cafeteria. The goal is to serve as a constant reminder to be nicer online. The murals represent a sun and its rays.

"The sun rises every day, and every day is a new day and a new opportunity to say great things,” says Filippone.
