Volunteer fire departments to hold open houses to recruit members
Volunteer fire departments across Long Island and New York are opening their doors to the public this weekend.
The move is part of an annual recruitment effort to boost membership.
Some departments have struggled to retain volunteers in recent years.
Volunteers also get benefits, like property tax reductions and college tuition reimbursements.
Stop down, even if you aren't sure you want to volunteer," said Michael Krummenacker, of the Firemen's Association of the State of the New York.
"Come find out what your volunteer fire department is all about."
Krummenacker also said that volunteer department are not only looking for young recruits, but recruits in their 30s, as well.
The open houses are on tomorrow and Sunday.
