The uncle of a student killed in the Parkland, Florida, school shooting spoke during a gun reform rally Wednesday at Suffolk County Community College’s Brentwood campus.
Paul Guttenberg, the uncle of Jaime Guttengberg, shared his niece’s story – and how school shootings have affected his family.
“My brother, my sister-in-law and my nephew – they will never be OK,” said Guttenberg. “They will learn to deal with it, but they will never be OK. Because their daughter was taken away from them at age 14 by a crazy person who should not have been allowed to own a gun.”
Rallying students on all three SCCC campuses demanded change to gun laws and how mental health issues are handled in the U.S.
On the Brentwood campus, students put out 122 pairs of shoes in the library lobby to represent the 122 lives lost in school shootings since Columbine.
