SHIRLEY -

Police say they're searching for a hit-and-run driver who critically injured a pedestrian in Shirley early Sunday morning.

Detectives say the victim was crossing William Floyd Parkway near Flintlock Drive at around 2:30 a.m. when he was struck.

The pedestrian has been identified as 21-year-old Gerson Izaguirre, of Mastic. Police say he was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition.

Witnesses told police that the driver was in a red sedan that may have damage to the front end and driver’s side.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS, or to call the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752.

Neighbors were not surprised to hear of the incident because they say crashes in the area are frequent, and they say speeding is often to blame.
