Homeowners: Flooding in Fort Salonga a problem for decades

Posted: Updated:
FORT SALONGA -

Some residents on the North Shore say officials are passing the buck when it comes to fixing their flood-prone streets.

After Monday’s torrential downpour, homeowners along Bread and Cheese Hollow Road in Fort Salonga had to deal with floodwaters covering their street and driveways.

Longtime residents like Keith Macartney say it’s been a problem for decades.

“It's been going on since I was young child. And I'm 62 now,” says Macartney. “Several years ago, we had 30 inches of water in my garage.”

Bread and Cheese Hollow Road is a county road. On one side is the Town of Huntington and on the other is the Town of Smithtown. Suffolk County says the sump on the corner of Bread and Cheese and Pulaski is causing the problem.

A statement from the county says, "Since this is a matter that may involve a clay layer preventing proper drainage, Suffolk County [Department of Public Works] will be conducting a soil boring to determine the cause of the issue and, if necessary, install diffusion wells that would likely resolve the matter."

Neighbors say there's also not enough drainage on the road.

Suffolk’s highway superintendent told News 12 that his department is expected to begin curb and drainage work at the end of this month. Suffolk’s DPW will be conducting that soil test at the sump Thursday.
