This Sunday is Earth Day! But one Long Island school is trying to think about the earth every day. News 12 Long Island's Elizabeth Hashagen heads to Northport High School in part one of our weeklong series Go Green
Many schools have clubs and classes that focus on being earth friendly - but at Northport High School they take a team approach. Their Environment Team meets for four consecutive periods, five days per week.
"So we teach English, science, and social studies and we do an interdisciplinary approach where we do research and community activism," says one of the teachers.
As you might imagine, Earth Week is a big deal to these students.
Participation in government is part of this curriculum - which means leaving the classroom. Some of these students helped Suffolk County pass its ban on plastic bags.
In addition to creating posters and murals to inspire other students, they also have the "Eco Challenge."
With the challenge, students hope to inspire people in the community to change small habits for the better, like carpooling, turning off the sink, shorter showers, and maybe a meatless Monday.
