A public meeting was held at Islip Town Hall Thursday regarding a developer’s plan to bring more than 1,300 apartments to the old Island Hills golf course in Sayville.
The apartment complex plan proposed by Rechler Equity Partners has been met with opposition from some residents, who have raised concerns about traffic, tall buildings and its impact on local schools.
Residents asked the town not to approve a zoning change the developers would need to move forward.
"This is too much, too big for what they want to put in here,” said resident Chris Ragusa. “…There is no reason to put a mini city right here in our backyard."
Residents had their chance Thursday to voice concerns about the environmental impact of the project. The developers said in a statement that this is the first step in the review process. They say they remain committed to working with the town and residents on this project.
