Police say gang-related graffiti was found scrawled at a park in Riverside earlier this month.
The graffiti in the public bathrooms at Wildwood Lake Park displayed the No. 18, a marking of the 18th Street Gang – a main rival of MS-13.
Southampton Town police say it’s the first time they have seen the gang’s marking in their jurisdiction.
Lt. Susan Ralph says the gang is “marking their territory” and the graffiti is intended to directly disrespect MS-13.
“The department wants to reassure [the public] that we are actively and aggressively investigating this,” said Ralph.
Police say they will increase their patrols in the park. A local community group also wants the town to install surveillance cameras in the area.
The town says it's working on an LED light and security camera project. It says Wildwood Park should have security cameras by the end of the year.
