A man suspected of killing two people found dead at the intersection of routes 7 and 55 in New Milford was himself found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Dover, just across the New York state line, according to police.
Lt. Lawrence Ash, of the New Milford Police Department, said the slayings in the small village of Gaylordsville were an isolated incident.
"All parties that were involved in this have been identified tentatively," he said. "So there's no threat to the community at this point."
Ash said police received information about the first shooting around 9 a.m. They arrived at the intersection and found the two victims dead in a pickup truck at the intersection.
Police in North Carolina say the victims are 20-year-old Katie Pladl and her adoptive father, Anthony Fusco. They identified the suspected killer as Steven Pladl. He was the young woman's biological father.
North Carolina police say the infant victim was believed to be the child of the two Pladls. New Milford police have not confirmed the relationship between the involved parties.
"We usually hear gunshots from the mountain," said Jeffrey Weinzierl, a New Milford resident who heard the gunfire. "People target shoot all the time, but that was not target shooting. You could just tell. You know it was too close, too close to the road."
