Driver faces charges in fatal pedestrian crash

HUNTINGTON -

A Huntington man is accused of getting behind the wheel after consuming alcohol and fatally striking a pedestrian with his SUV Saturday night.

Police say 75-year-old David Thompson was heading east on Jericho Turnpike in South Huntington around 9:30 p.m. when his Chevrolet Equinox slammed into a pedestrian near Oakwood Road.

The victim has been identified as 54-year-old Anthony Santiago, of Huntington Station. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Thompson is charged with driving with ability impaired by alcohol, which means his blood alcohol content was allegedly higher than .05, but lower than .08, which is the threshold for DWI.

News 12 spoke with Thompson as he was led out of the 2nd Precinct in Elwood Sunday morning. He told News 12 that he didn't have much to drink -- claiming that he had a drink around 1 p.m. Saturday.

Thompson went before a judge Sunday and was released without bail pending further investigation. He's scheduled to be back in court on May 14.

Police say their investigation is ongoing, and they're urging anyone with information about the crash to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555.
