Viral flyers calling for April 3 to become "Punish a Muslim Day" and making a game out of violent hate crimes have crossed the Atlantic Ocean from the United Kingdom and are prompting local law enforcement to step up security outside Islamic houses of worship.
The flyers list a point system, awarding various amounts to people who commit acts of violence against Muslims.
Deadly acts like murder, mosque bombings or attacks on Mecca, Islam's holiest city, score the highest.
Interfaith leaders on Long Island denounced the images Tuesday from the steps of the Mineola courthouse.
"May God grant us the wisdom to stand shoulder to shoulder and say no to hatred and bigotry," said Isma Chaudhry, of the Islamic Center of Long Island.
To counter the flyers, religious leaders on Long Island are proposing a "Greet a Muslim Day" on April 6 to show solidarity with local Muslims.
