Neighbors: 10-mile trail in Rocky Point brings safety, privacy concerns

Posted: Updated:
ROCKY POINT -

Some neighbors in Rocky Point have some concerns about a proposal to build a 10-mile biking and hiking trail that would be close to their backyards.

The federal- and county-funded project called "Rails to Trails" will create a paved path along an abandoned Long Island Rail Road track path between Port Jefferson and Wading River. While some neighbors are on board with the trail proposal, others who live in the Rocky Point area are upset because they say it will be an invasion of privacy.

“As we are hanging out as a family, I am going to have people watching everything that we are doing. I'm like in a fish bowl,” says neighbor Michelle Savickas.

News 12 Long Island attempted to reach Suffolk Legislator Sarah Anker, who has spearheaded the project. She has not returned a call to comment.

Residents told News 12 that they have asked Anker for months for a private meeting about the issue, but the legislator has not responded.

A second public hearing is scheduled for April 5 at Miller Place High School. The trail is slated to be built in spring 2019.
