The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has erased references to breast cancer from its website.

According to a ThinkProgress report, breast cancer information was removed Dec. 6 from Womenshealth.gov/cancer because it wasn't mobile-friendly.

News 12 reached out to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the agency responsible for the site, about why it's taken so long to replace potentially lifesaving information.

Officials said in a statement, "Before we update any of the information on the website, we engage in a comprehensive audit and use analysis process that includes reviewing other federal consumer health websites to ensure we are not duplicating efforts or presenting redundant information."

The webpage does include info on cervical, uterine and ovarian cancer.

Geri Barish, a five-time cancer survivor who works with cancer advocacy groups, says Health.gov's recent removal of information on breast cancer is dangerous.

"You just don't take this off, especially since we've learned so much about breast cancer correlations to so many other cancers and ills -- it didn't make sense," Barish says.

The Department of Health and Human Services says that until it replaces its breast cancer page, information about the cancer and other resources could be found through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
