Curran outlines to-do list in first State of the County address

GARDEN CITY -

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran laid out her vision for the future of the county in her first State of the County address Wednesday night.

Curran outlined a long to-do list to fix the problems she said she inherited from Ed Mangano's administration. Curran says she's already begun working on her first order of business: restoring ethics in government.

"Since taking office, I have signed two executive orders that remove politics from my administration and put government first," says Curran. "The first executive order, signed in January, banned any of my appointees from holding leadership positions in any political party. The same executive order forbids any members of my administration from donating to my political campaigns."

She says her second goal is restoring fiscal integrity to the county, which was running a $15 million deficit when she took office.

Curran says the creation of jobs will bolster her third goal, which is strengthening economic development.

She also spoke about school safety improvements in the wake of the Parkland school shooting. The county executive says each school district has been assigned a designated police officer to coordinate a response plan for an active shooter and to receive reports about student concerns.
