A plan to charge fees for use of Nassau County athletics fields has been overturned after a large amount of backlash.
The plan was introduced by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, but fees on field use will once again be waived after a unanimous decision, according to Legislator Richard Nicolello. He added that those who were forced to pay will be reimbursed.
Those against the plan packed the Nassau County Legislature Monday to show their displeasure. Several representatives of county Little Leagues and senior citizens in softball leagues were in attendance.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran's office had announced that it would stop waiving field-use fees. Since, some groups reported receiving bills of up to $16,000.
The amount of money that would have been collected by these fees amounts to $269,000, which Legislator Steve Rhoads said was extremely small in comparison to the county's overall budget.
"In the context of a $2.9 billion budget, it is less than 1/100 of 1 percent," says Rhoads.
