A man was shot and injured during a home invasion in New Cassel Saturday night, and police say both the suspect and a resident of the home are facing charges.

It happened around 9 p.m. Saturday at a home on Carleton Street. Police say a 23-year-old man was walking to a friend's house and was approaching the front door when he was suddenly pushed inside by the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Patrick Spruill, of New Cassel.

Police say Spruill displayed a handgun and ordered the victim and a 25-year-old male resident of the home to get on the floor and empty their pockets. That's when the 23-year-old victim took a knife from his pocket and tried to ward off Spruill, police say.

Investigators say Pruill opened fire, shooting the victim twice in his arms. The victim ran from the home and was hospitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Spruill was located at Nassau University Medical Center, where police say he was seeking treatment for stab and slash wounds. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder, burglary, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal use of a firearm and disorderly conduct.

Officers responding to the scene say they recovered a firearm, narcotics and marijuana from the home. The resident of the home, identified as 25-year-old Wesley Garcia, was arrested for criminal possession of a firearm and drug-possession charges.
