A new initiative is using some girl power to help those less fortunate.
The Food Bank for New York City's warehouse and volunteers are putting together feminine hygiene packages as part of their 'women-to-women' campaign.
More than 65 volunteers and food bank staff members are assembling feminine hygiene packs in the Hunts Point facility as part of the food bank for NYC's first female-focused program.
They're taking items donated from people throughout the city like maxi pads and tampons and creating bundles that will be distributed to those in need through the food bank's network of soup kitchens and food pantries across the five boroughs.
The program is part of the monthlong, citywide drive to help the 1 million women and girls who they say are living in poverty throughout the city.
Organizers tell News 12 the initiative is vital because many women living below the poverty line are forced to choose between buying food and the feminine products they need.
They say they're excited to get the program going and volunteers tell News 12 they're happy to be a part of it as well.
They say the goal of the whole project is to make New York City the first city to offer feminine care products in every soup kitchen and food pantry.
