Family demands action by town after attack on dog

CENTEREACH -

A family in Centereach is calling on the Town of Brookhaven to enforce its Dog Control and Animal Welfare law after a dog was attacked twice on the same block.

Coala, a 12-year-old Labrador mix, is still recovering after being attacked by a neighbor’s pit bull mix last month. The dog’s owner, Sheri Johnson, says the attacking dog got loose from a neighbor’s home on Wood Road and caused injures to Coala.

Johnson says she has already accrued more than $2,000 in veterinarian bills.

She says Coala was also attacked last year by another pit bull mix from the same home.

“This whole situation has been so emotionally traumatizing to us…Every time we go outside, we don't know if we are safe or not,” says Johnson.

Town of Brookhaven officials say the dog in last year’s attack was seized and its owner later agreed to have it put down.

Neighbors say the town has done little about the other dog. In a statement to News 12, the town insisted it is keeping an eye on the animal.

"Town Animal Control officers have monitored this location since the first incident took place.  Further investigation at this location is continuing," it said in a statement.

The Town of Brookhaven also said that it is actively enforcing its dog laws.
