Students walked out of more than 20 Brooklyn schools Wednesday in protest of gun violence.
At 10 a.m., hundreds of Academy for Young Writers and Spring Creek Community School students in East New York simply got up from their desks and left the building. It was in response to the Valentine's Day mass shooting that killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
The Brooklyn students joined others nationwide. The symbolic gesture lasted 17 minutes - one minute for each Parkland victim.
The students also had another message, addressing all the people of color who have been killed by guns and the overall violence in their community.
