East End expected to bear brunt of heaviest snowfall

RIVERHEAD -

The East End is facing the most expected snow accumulations as the latest nor'easter bears down on Long Island.

News 12 meteorologists say most of Suffolk County will see 4 to 8 inches of snow from the storm, but spots on the East End could see higher totals. Winds will be gusty, with near-blizzard conditions possible.

In Riverhead, town crews spent the day Monday filling up sand and salt trucks and making sure snowplows are ready to roll.

"We have the equipment to do what we have to out here, so it could be 5 feet of snow -- it wouldn't bother us out here," says Riverhead Highway Superintendent George Woodson. "We're ready for it."

Riverhead town officials were asking residents to move their cars from the streets Monday night to give plows room to clear the snow. And the state Department of Transportation says plow crews are coming from upstate to help out.

But there are also concerns about coastal flooding in areas like downtown Riverhead along Main Street. And gusty winds combined with wet, heavy snow could bring power outages.

The timing of the storm could make for a messy Tuesday morning commute. County Executive Steve Bellone offered some advice for residents ahead of the storm.

"The message to people who are thinking about getting to work is get up early, look at the forecast and track where the storm has gone," Bellone says.
