#N12BK: Trump’s proposed gun laws changes
President Donald Trump says he wants to make changes to certain gun laws and improve overall safety inside of schools to prevent more shootings.
The Trump administration says it wants to change the way background checks are conducted when purchasing certain guns.
The president says he would also support arming teachers with concealed guns and allowing armed guards inside of schools as a deterrent against a possible shooter.
Trump tweeted Monday about a White House gun violence plan. The administration has pledged to help states pay for firearms training for teachers and is seeking to improve the background check and mental health systems. But increasing the minimum age to buy assault weapons is going to a new federal commission for study.
Trump first publicly favored age restrictions on buying guns last month after suggesting some gun sales should be restricted to people who are 18-years-old.
A possible ban on bump stocks would also be a part of the proposed legislation.
Stoneman Douglas High School shooting survivor David Hogg says the laws need to be changed now.
"To President Trump I say this: show us that you're better than the other politicians, show us that you want to take action and save our future because God knows we need it."
Trump is also supporting a plan to create a commission chaired by Education Secretary Betsy Devos that would recommend policy and funding proposals for school violence prevention programs.
The proposals come more than three weeks after 17 people were killed in the Parkland, Florida school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School.
