Police say a man was drunk behind the wheel when he crashed his Jeep into a police vehicle and injured an officer in Brookhaven early Saturday morning.
Authorities say the officer was in his vehicle stationed at the scene of a road closure for downed wires on Montauk Highway near Old South Country Road around 3:30 a.m. That's when police say a Jeep driven by 28-year-old Dennis Knapp crashed into the officer's vehicle.
Officials say the 5th Precinct officer was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The officer's identity wasn't released.
Knapp, of Shirley, was taken to Long Island Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say Knapp is charged with driving while intoxicated.
