Town tests new 'pothole killer' to plug car-rattling craters

HUNTINGTON -

A Long Island town is deploying a new tool to combat winter's scourge of potholes.

The Town of Huntington's so called "pothole killer" is a special machine that sprays an asphalt mix into a pothole. The town says it makes for a longer lasting patch than that of a typical road crew.

And it can tackle more potholes, too. Huntington Highway Superintendent Kevin Orelli says crews typically tackle about 40 potholes a day -- but the pothole killer can patch 100.

The machine is on loan to the town for a couple of weeks to test it out. But the town says if all goes well, drivers could be seeing it on local roads much more.

"This is going to be cost-saving," says Huntington Town Supervisor Chad Lupinacci. "It's more efficient, it is using modern technology."

The DOT is asking anyone who sees a pothole on a state road to call 1-800-POTHOLE.

Drivers whose cars were damaged by potholes state roads may be able to get reimbursed for the cost of repairs. To file, visit the state DOT website.
