The Trump administration's deadline for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program arrived Monday, but the issue remains on hold as a court considers a challenge to the president's order.

DACA is the policy that shields young people who were brought to the country illegally as children from being deported. 

President Donald Trump claims the Obama administration created it illegally and has told Congress to come up with a fix.

President Trump tweeted Monday afternoon to blame Democratic lawmakers, who hold a minority of seats in both the House and the Senate, for not addressing the issue.

The president has previously insisted that any legislation saving DACA had to be coupled with funding for his promised border wall and an overhaul of the legal immigration system.

DACA beneficiaries like Brentwood's Marcy Saurez, of Brentwood call themselves "Dreamers." They say they are living in limbo because their future immigration status remains unclear without a DACA deal. Their renewal applications may not be completed before their current work permits and other protections expire.

Immigration attorney Eric Horn says those who still have DACA permits expiring within the next five months should renew them.

Horn says those who have never applied for DACA won't be able to. He adds those who have a criminal conviction or were involved in court proceedings should consult with an immigration attorney before reapplying.
