Two women were rescued from dangerous flood waters in Bay Shore Sunday.

Chopper 12 was over the scene as firefighters in Bay Shore rescued the Helen Lein, of Hicksville, and her 90-year-old mother, Peggy Pappas.

Lein said she and her mother were on their way to a 70th birthday party at Whalers around 12 p.m. She was driving her SUV on Maple Avenue when she got stuck in a flooded street.

"The car just you could feel wouldn't go anymore and then it just went dead, so we were just sitting in the car and the water started to come into the car,” she said. "We put our feet on the seats and I got scared for a minute because it was very creepy."

Lein called 911, and firefighters came to their rescue. 

"They carried my mother out of the car put her in the boat, got her walker and pushed the boat down the street where she could get out,” she says.

The entire operation took about 20 minutes.

Bay Shore firefighters say Sunday’s rescue was the second on Maple Avenue since Friday's storm. They say they rescued more than 75 people from Whalers and the Lake House around 11 p.m.
