LI lawmaker pushing for ban on armed teachers

A Long Island lawmaker is pushing for a ban on teachers carrying firearms in schools amid calls to arm educators following the shooting in Parkland, Florida.
New York state Sen. Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach) unveiled legislation Saturday that would prohibit teachers from carrying guns in schools.
"More guns is not and will never be the answer," he said. "When we decide to arm teachers, we are implicitly saying there is nothing that can be done."
Kaminsky says more available mental health care options is what's really needed.
"In our state, when people are trying to find mental health care treatment, they are all too often turned away from their insurance companies to find the help they want," says the state senator.
Kaminsky says he will formally introduce the proposed legislation on Monday.
President Donald Trump is among those calling for armed teachers in schools.
News 12 spoke to Long Islanders who were mixed on the issue. Some said they would support armed teachers in schools to protect students, while others said it could lead to more problems.
Celina Bialt has been a teacher for 29 years, and she tells News 12 she can't imagine being armed in her own classroom.
"I think that first and foremost it's dangerous for teachers to be armed in an active shooter situation," she says.
