Nor'easter disrupts travelers, commuters

HICKSVILLE -

A nor'easter snarled traffic for some evening commuters and disrupted the Long Island Rail Road Friday.

The evening commute saw LIRR suspensions on the West Hempstead, Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay and Ronkonkoma branches due to fallen utility poles. Signal problems prompted officials to suspend the Port Washington branch between Great Neck and Port Washington. Riders were advised to delay their travel and follow the LIRR on Twitter for updates -- but many hired cabs to get home.

Delays had been reported on some lines earlier during the day due to debris on the tracks. Several lines were temporarily suspended in the afternoon due to weather-related signal issues.

Arielle Mancebo was among the Long Islanders taking the train amid the messy conditions. She called her commute "tricky" but said her return home was better than the ride to work in the morning.

Drivers said the combination of snow and ice made for a lot of headaches. Jericho resident Diana Morello described her ride as awful. Kevin Maddox of Huntington said he saw a number of accidents -- and a few cars hydroplaning.

There were a number of apparently weather-related road hazards. A car ended up on the shoulder of the Northern State Parkway and backed up traffic for miles. A downed tree blocked a lane on the Meadowbrook Parkway just north of Babylon Turnpike.

The rain, sleet and snow also caused coastal flooding, which forecasters say may remain a problem throughout the weekend.
