Police: Man sent bomb materials to Long Island teen girl

HEMPSTEAD -

A man faced a judge Friday after police say he sent bomb-like devices containing radioactive material to a teenage girl in Plainview.

Police say 22-year-old James Dickerson, of South Carolina, sent fake bombs to a 19-year-old Plainview girl three separate times in November.

Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says it all started when Dickerson started talking to the girl online.

Investigators say it was rejection that prompted Dickerson to send the materials.

“She wanted to cut the relationship off, he did not, so he started to send her things in the mail over the course of the year,” says Ryder.

Police say Dickerson sent an ISIS flag to the girl in addition to a pressure cooker with thumbtacks and ammonium nitrate, which is used in fertilizer, but can be explosive.

Prosecutors say Dickerson also went on Amazon and bought a small sample of radioactive uranium ore and sent it to the teen's house.

The items prompted Nassau police and the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force to investigate.

Dickerson has been extradited to Nassau County and has pleaded not guilty.

He was charged with harassment and three counts of placing a false bomb or hazardous substance.

A judge issued an order of protection against Dickerson to stay away from the victim.

He is being held on $300,000 bond.

Dickerson is due back in court on March 6.
