SPCA: Riverhead woman starved dog until it ate its own feces

Authorities say a Riverhead woman starved her dog and left it outside in filth.
Town inspectors say an anonymous tip led them to find Louie, a year-old Rottweiler mix, in a small cage in Claire Kim Shands' backyard.
"The dog was in a cage with no food, no water, no shelter, nothing -- starving," says Nicole Buckner, Riverhead's ordinance inspector.
Suffolk SPCA officials say Shands, 28, admitted to detectives that she was not feeding her dog. She faces a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty.
"The dog was eating his own feces," says SPCA Capt. Paul Llobell. "(He) was not fed and cared for properly. The dog was living in inhumane conditions."
Staff at the North Fork Animal Welfare League say it appears as though Louie had not been fed for about two weeks. They say they are giving him small meals until his weight returns to near-normal.
"You can't give him too much all at once," says Eileen Kreiling, the shelter manager. "We're going to break him in a little at a time."
No one answered the door at Shands' home in Riverhead.
