The village of East Hampton may ban plastic foam.

The Styrofoam ban that was discussed Thursday by village officials would make it illegal for delis, restaurants and shops to use containers made of polystyrene foam.

“They’re not environmentally or ecologically suitable. We like to think we’re at the cutting edge of that technology. In 2011, we did pass a resolution to ban plastic bags and this is a natural adjunct in discussing banning Styrofoam materials,” says Mayor Paul Rickenbach.

The law, which is currently being crafted, would be similar to a ban passed in the village of Patchogue prohibiting the use of Styrofoam cups, containers, lids or plates.

If the law goes into effect, it will include foam used for packaging. The village law is also expected to include Styrofoam coolers.

Village officials say there are plenty of environmentally friendly alternatives.
Residents and visitors would not be penalized if they are in the village using a Styrofoam product.
A public hearing on the proposed law banning Styrofoam products is set for April 20.
The village of Patchogue's Styrofoam ban goes into effect this September.
